This fall, the Psi Chapter has geared its philanthropic efforts toward Victory Junction, a camp for terminally and chronically ill children. We held the Sigma Nu Pancake Dinner for the first time ever in the fall semester and raised more than $1,500. The chapter will host the 2nd Annual BBQ Cook-Off in the spring with hopes of raising more than $5,000 for the camp.
On top of large-scale philanthropy efforts, the Psi Chapter prides itself on giving back to the community through our community service. For the spring and fall semesters of 2009, Sigma Nu had over 35 hours of community service logged per brother both semesters. In the Fall 2009, we had 40 hours per brother and were fourth overall in IFC Fraternity community service. The chapter won the Service Award from The Carolina Fraternity and Sorority Community for the year 2009. This Spring 2010, we had 30 hours of service per brother.
This school year, we have helped with the following community service efforts:
•Volunteered with Habitat for Humanity/UNC’s Build-a-Block
•Hosted Nourish International’s “Midnight Munch” to fight hunger worldwide
•Volunteered monthly with the Ronald McDonald House of Chapel Hill beginning in January
•Co-hosted ”A Time to Give: Greeks Giving Thanks Together”, a cross-council benefit show benefiting the Orange County Holiday Food Program
•Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF
•OSFL Food Drive
•Good Neighbor Initiative
•Participated in various other Greek organizations’ philanthropy events
In previous semesters, the chapter has participated in a number of events that combined our service and philanthropic efforts. Last year, we co-hosted a Battle of the Bands Benefit Concert with a sorority and volunteered with the Hillsborough Chamber of Commerce charity golf tournament and charity chili cook-off. We previously geared our benefits toward Cystic Fibrosis, teaming up with on-campus dorms to host the Manning East Block party and helping with a local benefit pancake dinner.
This upcoming spring semester the chapter will continue to increase its already stellar service involvement. We are hoping to become more involved with Orange County Habitat for Humanity, which is part of Sigma Nu Nationals' Helping Hand Initiative.
